BACKGROUND: The Calypso was originally a minesweeper wooden hull mines built with five other identical boats for the Royal Navy by the Ballard Marine Railway Company of Seattle in Washington, United States. When he took the Calypso bar in 1951, Cousteau was piloting the ship that would enable him to realize his project: to use his inventions from pioneer discover the continental shelf. Upon acquisition, Calypso has been completely transformed by Cousteau oceanographic vessel at the shipyard of Antibes.
