The astrolabe was a barge carrying horses, which was converted into an exploration ship of the French Navy. It served to draw the maps of the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Between 1822 and 1850 the Astrolabe made several times round the world voyages of discovery.

HISTORY: The original name of the Astrolabe was La Coquille. In 1822 and until 1825, the Shell goes around the Earth under the command of Louis Isidore Duperrey. In 1826, it was renamed Astrolabe, referring to the old navigation instrument, the precursor of the sextant which appeared in the eighteenth century. April 22, 1826, the Astrolabe left Toulon for his second voyage of discovery around the world, this time under the command of Captain Dumont d'Urville. It was during this expedition that is 3 years in February 1828, at Vanikoro (Solomon Islands), where the ships of La Perouse had perished. The years following the Astrolabe continues his expeditions across the oceans. He discovered in Antarctica country he calls "Adélie Land" in honor of his wife. The last expedition of the Astrolabe has occurred between 1844 and 1850, when it sailed along the coasts of South America, before being scrapped in 1851.
